Spread The Word

Watchlist Wednesdays is a variation on the usual Think Ahead Tuesdays theme. It brings news of new hip hop tracks/ gigs/ films, as well as hot gossip

Work is currently under way on a new 2pac biopic, All Eyez On Me: which borrows its name from the late rapper’s fourth and most famous studio album. Other such films already released on the artist include, Tupac: Resurrection, Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel and Tupac: Reckoning, but this latest installment looks to be bigger and better.

Currently in the running to play Pac is Demetrius Shipp Jr, who despite lacking a solid acting background, bears a striking resemblance to the star. Also on board are Danai Gurira as Afeni Shakur; Kat Graham as Jada Pinkett Smith; Dominic L. Santana as Suge Knight; and Jamal Woolard as the Notorious Big. Woolard famously played the same part in  the Biggie biopic, Notorious in 2009. Even  Pac’s stepfather, Mutulu Shakur, will feature- Wire star, James Hector is front in line to play him.

Production on the film officially began in December, following months of delays which saw film maker, John Singleton part as lead Director. Taking to Instagram, Singleton argued that, ““the people involved [ in the film] aren’t really respectful of the legacy of Tupac.” He has instead been replaced by music video guru, Benny Boom. Boom has done vids for the likes of Nicki Minaj, Sean Paul, LL Cool J and Nas, and is certain to bring an MTV edge to the look and style of the film. Production comes from 2pac’s own mother, Afeni Shakur.

All Eyez on Me will chronicle the life and times of one of hip hop’s most controversial legends: from his early years in the rap game, to his untimely death at the age of 25 in 1996. Following the exciting release of Straight Outta Compton this summer, it will meet an audience still high off the thrillers of west coast rap. The release date is yet to be announced. Stay tuned for further details.
