Spread The Word

Watchlist Wednesdays is a variation on the usual Think Ahead Tuesdays theme. It brings news of new hip hop tracks/ gigs/ films, as well as hot gossip

With spring upon us, and a whole host of new hip hop albums due for release next month – including Drake’s Views From the Six (April 15th) and The Impossible Rock by Aesop Rock ( April 29th) – our thoughts have turned to new beginnings.

To see in the great season of change, we’re taking a look at a future release which has spring written all over it. “So we stand… bravely trying something new, facing that challenge, fighting for change, fighting against the sample police and fighting for our (and hopefully yours too) continued freedom.”: so goes the mantra for De La Soul’s forthcoming lp, And The Anonoymous Nobody, due out April 29th.

Their  first studio album  in over a decade, its been completely financed through a kickstarter campaign, and promises an eclectic mix of songs which, according to the trio break all the rules. When the group first started the campaign last March, their original aim was to reach $100,000. But in end they more quadrupled that, hitting $600,000 in contributions. An unsurprising feat for a group so worshiped after in rap circles.

De La Soul are without doubt one of the leading pioneers of jazz rap: a popular sub genre which fuses hip hop rhythms and jazz instrumentation. Along with ATCQ and The Jungle Brothers, they led a cultural revolution in rap, together forming the Native Tongues collective in the late 80’s. Regarded by many as the hippies of hip hop, they rapped about roller skating, potholes, self expression and made multi0coloured garms a trendy look among inner city kids.

Following the recent death of Phife Dawg, And The Anonoymous Nobody is just the boost Native Tongues needed at this sad time.

Guest stars on the album include, David Byrne, Jill Scott, Pete Rock and Usher.
