Watchlist Wednesdays: 5 Killer Producers To Watch Out For In 2016
By Anton Constantinou
Watchlist Wednesdays is a variation on the usual Think Ahead Tuesdays theme. It brings news of new hip hop tracks/ gigs/ films, as well as hot gossip
For the latest on what’s come behind the decks in 2016, we’ve rounded up our top 5 producers to follow next year. Here they are:
The Haitian- Canadian electronic musician/ producer has been in game for 5 years now. Since changing his name from Kaytradamus to Kaytranda in 2012, he’s released as many thirteen projects and sixteen remixes- including tracks by Common, Busta Rhymes and Jill Scott.
2016 marks the drop of his long awaited debut lp, So Bad, which was first announced in May 2014, and since then has continued to be pushed back. So far, 8 tracks have been released from it. According to article from Music Times in September, they range, ” funky disco edits, to soulful, downtempo, trip-hop tunes and straight up house tunes.” For a glimpse of what’s to come, peep his re-edit of Lucy Pearl’s, Don’t Mess With My Man, below.
2.) Metro Boomin’
For a 22 year old, American Record Producer, Metro Boomin’ has put out an impressive amount of work in a short space of time. He’s produced instrumentals for big names like Ludacris, Drake, Nicki Minaj and Wiz Khalifa. He’s also credited for the singles Karate Chop, Honest, I Won, Tuesday and 3500.
Right now he’s working closely with Lil Wayne on Tha Carter V– which has so far been held up due to legal troubles. Here’s hoping it drops in 2016. His other projects in the running for next year include, Migos Thuggin (Migos & Young Thug) and a potential back-to-roots lp from Big Sean- which is being kept under tight wraps at the moment. He’s also overseeing Pusha T’s latest album, Darkest Before Dawn, which is due out later this month on December 18th.
3.) London On Da Track
A frequent collaborator with Young Thug, 24 year old Atlanta native, London On Da Track is a producer on the up. He’s done stuff with Waka Rocka Flame, Rich Homie Quan, Gucci Mane, T.I and Travis Porter and is right now working on Fiddy’s upcoming studio album, Street King Immortal– which is rumoured to be out next year.
The lead single from it, Get Low, features guest appearances from 2 chainz, t.i and Jermih. Arguably his biggest production credit to date is Rich Gang single, Lifestyle, which hit number 1 US R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart in 2014.
Kendrick fans should be well aware of Knxwledge. The American instrumental hip hop musician recently produced the killer track, Momma from To Pimp A Butterfly. Elsewhere he’s worked with Joey Badass, Blu, Homeboy Sandman and Capital Steez. His songs mix old and new rap with elements and jazz and soul.
His latest venture is a partnership with a R&B vocalist, Anderson Paak. The two have combined to form NxWorries. Last spring they kicked off with the single, Suede, followed by Link Up, and now they’re adding the finishing touches to their full length album, due for release in 2016. The title of the album is yet to be confirmed.
Here are their two most recent tracks:
Over in the UK, London based Producer, Sumgii, is on course for launching his debut solo EP next year. It will feature guest appearances from both UK and US emcees. Best known for his work with the likes of Cult Mountain, Problem Child, Piff Gang and LDZ, his glitchy, bass heavy instrumentals make for truly authentic listening.
Earlier this year he played at Boom Bap Festival- and had the pleasure of coming on before Earl Sweatshirt and Skepta. More recently he put out a new instalment in his exciting RWD mix series. “There are probably a few tracks on here that will get me told off,” he admits. Check out the mix here
