Think Ahead Thursday: Goldlink hits up the UK
By Anton Constantinou
Washington born MC, Goldlink, will very soon be playing at London’s XOYO as part of his forthcoming world tour.
The tour comes fresh off the back off his first studio album, And After That We Didn’t Talk– released only weeks ago on November 6th- and will take him right through until the middle of February 2016.
Goldlink is a unique rapper is his own right, with a style that mixes 90’s hip hop and Rnb with elements of funk, soul and house. This he calls the “future bounce sound”- as pioneered on his debut mixtape, The Gold Complex. He’s hyper, upbeat , experimental and has this year been been named among XXL’S 2015 Freshman Class. Informing his eclectic approach, are far-out influences Edgar Allen Poe, Canadian Synth Pop artist, Grimes, and 70’s Funk Band, Go-go. Other inspirations of his include gospel music and Def Jam Poetry.
22 year old Goldlink, born D’Anthony Carlos, began making music as teenager, after graduating from High School in North Virginia. Starting out in a local studio, he went on to release tracks on Bandcamp under the rap name, Gold Link James. With his bandcamp songs came increased interest in the Youtube and Tumblr community. This allowed him to hone his signature style whilst also growing his online fanbase.
By June 2013 he’d changed his name to Goldlink and released his first song under the name. Thereafter he began dropping regular joints on Soundcloud, including remixes of songs by beatsmiths like Ta-ku and Kaytranada. April 2014 saw the exciting release of his first lp, The God Complex, which went on to score an impressive 7.9 on Pitchfork. It includes the dope tracks, Planet Paradise– where Goldlink raps triple time- and Bedtime Story, which bears striking similarities to Tribe Classic, Electric Relaxation. To further the success of the album, Goldlink joined Flume and SBTRKT for a series of live shows that Autumn. He also briefly accompanied Andre 3000 on the London stop of his Euro Tour.
If his North American Headlining tour this summer was anything to go by, then UK fans should expect a kickass show come his arrival on home soil. Goldlink will be taking the stage at XOYO on Wednesday 2nd December. Purchase your ticket now at, http://www.bandsintown.com/Goldlink.
