SummerSlam Madness – The Top Ten Moments Ever From The Biggest Party Of The Summer
SummerSlam is just around the corner, we countdown the top moments that made the event as big as it is today with clips, GIFs and pics of moments that made us mark out.
10. Shane McMahon falls off the tower
The prodical son of Vince McMahon often get’s overlooked for when talking about exciting in-ring performers. Shane O’ Mac was no stranger to going the extra mile when it came to entertaining the fans, especially here in his match with Steve Blackman for the Hardcore Championship in 2000. Blackman sent his rival crashing down from the podium before delivering a leaping elbow drop to win the match.
09. Steve Austin finishes his match with a broken neck
Before leading the Attitude Era with his smash mouthed promos and brawling matches, Stone Cold was grappling with the best technicians in the world. Austin’s ongoing Saga with the Hart family in 1997 led to a bout with Owen where Austin’s necked cracked in a reverse piledriver mishap. “The Rattlesnake” was determined to finish the match and managed to roll his opponenent up for the pin before walking out on his feet.
08. Jeff Hardy Swanton Bombs off a 30 ft ladder
When CM Punk first debuted in the WWE, his existing fans were calling for a heel turn following his excellence as a villian in the independent scene. “The Voice of the Voiceless” finally turned in 2009 and worked a very personal storyline with Jeff Hardy and exploited his personal drug use. Hardy finally got to grips with his foe at SummerSlam and delivered this breathtaking Swanton Bomb from one of the largest ever ladders ever seen in a wrestling arena.
07. Brock Lesnar defeats The Rock to become the youngest WWE Champion ever
“The Beast Incarnate” gave us one of the fastest rises within the company during his acension to the main roster in 2002. Brock affirmed his place amongst the main event players when he delivered the f5 to The Rock to become the youngest ever WWE Champion. The win came only four months after the powerhouse debuted and sent him on a long trip of global dominance for years to come.
06. The Ultimate Warrior ends The Honky Tonk Man’s Intercontinental Title reign in record breaking time
Honky Tonk Man held the Intercontinental Championship for 454 days before the late Warrior returned from a spell out and won the title in less than a minute. Warrior would go on to have a colourful career and make quick work of many superstars, including at WrestleMania 12 where he squashed Triple H with the splash in seconds.
05. Shawn Michaels returns to the ring after 4 years in retirement
Everyone believed that HBK’s career was over when he dropped the WWE Championship to Stone Cold in 1998 due to recurring back injuries. Michaels however manage to defy the odds and made his way back to the squared circle in 2002 where he faced his former best friend Triple H in a street fight. “The Showstopper” defeated his betrayer but The Game couldn’t take the loss and attacked Michaels with a sledgehammer after the match to further their rivalry.
04. The Undertaker sends Edge to hell
Edge took on the ruler of Hell in a Cell in 2008 in the midst of the pair’s ongoing feud that lead the Smackdown Roster. Edge found himself at his best as a heel during this period and fans were at ease when they saw “The Phenom” chokeslam the antagonist from a ladder and through the ring following their intense battle.
03. Randy Orton defeats Chris Benoit to win his first of many World Championships
Before becoming “The Viper”, Orton was known as the Legend Killer and one of his first conquering of a veteran was at SummerSlam 2004 where delivered the RKO to Chris Benoit to win the World Title. The two competitors showed great respect for each other following the match as they shared a handshake to mark a compelling match that would be Orton’s last night in Evolution.
02. Tables Ladders and Chairs
Fans were treated to some of most exciting tag teams during the end part of the Attitude Era with countless big name teams battling for the Tag Team Championships. Edge & Christian defeated The Hardy Boyz and The Dudley Boyz in the first ever TLC match to retain the titles in a match full as many OMG moments in one night as we see in a year nowadays.
01. Daniel Bryan beats John Cena to win his first WWE Championship before Randy Orton cashes in
When Cena announced that his opponent would be Bryan at SummerSlam 2013, fans were gearing to see their newfound hero defeat the Cenation leader and become the new face of the company. Bryan delivered a thunderous knee to the face of Cena and the crowd were at fever pitch before Orton’s music hit and guest referee Triple H hit Bryan with a Pedigree which allowed “The Apex Predator” to cash in his Money in the Bank breifcase to win the title and start the rule of The Authority.
