Flashback Fridays celebrates everything old skool and timeless about hip hop: classic tracks, vintage flicks, past gigs. Each week we’ll be diggin’ in the crates to bring you the best throwback shizzle on offer. Enjoy!
Today in hip hop history we celebrate the birthday of music legend Andre 3000, born Andre Lauren Benjamin in 1975.
Best known for his role in the rap duo, Outkast – alongside Big Boi – the 40 year old rapper, singer -songwriter and multi instrumentalist remains one of coolest cats in the game. He’s eccentric, individualistic, entrepreneurial, and to add his illustrious music career, has appeared in a number of TV series and films. But that’s only scratching surface.
Rather than bore you with you with a long biography – which can easily be found on Wikipedia – we’ve instead picked out a few choice facts about the star which may take you by surprise. Without further adieu, here are the top 5 things you didn’t know about Andre 3000:
1.) He was once named ‘The World’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity’
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) gifted him the title in 2004 on account of his veganism and animal rights work. For an industry so hung up on gristle gnawing machismo, Andre’s proved that you can still be green and trendy.
2.) He has a child with Erykah Badu
Not only did he date the neo soul goddess, but they had a son together.
Seven Sirius Benjamin, now 17, and soon to embark on higher education, recently did his parents proud by successfully getting accepted into all four colleges he applied for. Talent breeds talent, indeed.
3.) He turned down a role in Dreamgirls
Andre was originally in the running to play the role of C.C. White in the 2006 music drama film – a part which was also offered to Usher and Omarion.
Had he accepted, he would starred alongside Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy in the double Oscar winner.
4.) He’s created his own animated TV series
Cartoon Network’s Class of 3000 centred on music teacher and superstar, Sunny Bridges, who worked at a performing arts school in Atlanta.
Despite being pulled by the channel in 2008, the sitcom received positive ratings on both IMDB and TV.com.
5.) He has six tattoos and hates all of them
He may dress like a peacock, but he loathes his own body art.
“I had six silly tattoos done when I was young and I bitterly regret them,” he explained to The Guardian in 2009.
