Interview: How Digital Artist Alan Baker Turns People Into Superheroes

Spread The Word

What did you want to be when you were younger? For many of us, the obvious answer is often something wild and fantastical like astronaut or actor/actress. Some of us even dreamed of becoming our favourite superheroes. I, for one, wanted to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, but quickly put the thought to rest after realising how dirty the sewers are.

For digital artist, Alan Baker, turning people into their favourite characters is a creative mission. His commissions reveal a side of humanity that strives for strength and wish-fulfilment; for role-playing beyond the ordinary.

We were fortunate enough to speak with Alan directly in a podcast interview at Marylebone’s The Cockpit. Here’s what he had to say:

How long have you been drawing/painting?

Like a lot of artists, I’ve been drawing since I was a child. My early obsession with animations and cartoons is where it all began.

How would you describe approach?

My approach is very cartoonafied. I also tend to work very fast. I’ll usually just get the bulk of a piece done and then touch-up whatever areas need fixing.

What are the main mediums you work with?

I used to be heavily pencil-based and do a lot of paintings. Since university, however, I’ve crossed-over to doing solely digital art work.

Digital art portraits have proved an exciting turning point for you. What got you into doing them?

I started digital art when I got introduced to a tablet for my animation work in university. Initially it started off as experiments, before later becoming a hobby. Next, I created a piece that went viral and, before I knew it, commissions started flooding in. Here’s a link to my final year project at university:

What new work can we expect from you?

You can expect me to expand my work and get back into creating my own art pieces in, doing meaningful pieces that inspire people.
